Vertebra Paintings

This series of paintings of bison vertebrae grew out of my artistic mother’s expertise in articulating animal skeletons. She was fascinated by the beauty of the individual bones as well as the full skeletons, and included bones in some of her artwork, both literally and as subject matter. I began painting the bison vertebrae when she was no longer able to make art, so I consider the series as homage to her creativity.
